Per Aspera Ad Astra (Latin for "Through hardships to the stars"), also known as Ad Astra, is a community support group formed after the Aug Incident to help the augmented reintegrate into society. The group has a presence in Prague, as seen in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

Background[]

Ad Astra was founded in 2028 with the goal of building rebuild the community of man by helping the augmented reintegrate. Their belief is that through compassion, understanding, and respect, it is possible to find harmony between the Augmented and the Naturals. Despite the persecution faced by the Augmented, members of Ad Astra believing in pushing back with kindness and compassion.[1]

Activities in Prague[]

In 2029, the group has a community center across from Zeleň Apartments in the Překážka district, repurposed from a second-level apartment unit. Group efforts can be as large and ambitious as promoting official government support all the way to simply lending a sympathetic ear. The group offer basic services and relies on voluntary aid from naturals.[2] An "Ad Astra" graffiti can also be seen on the nearby the community center.

The community is sometimes met with hostilities from detractors.[3] After Adam Jensen returns from Golem city, Ad Astra graffiti in the community center and on the street can be seen defaced with the word cruentus, Latin for "soaked in blood."

Trivia[]

  • According to developer commentary, Ad Astra is a little story that is optimistic, in contrast to the gloomy setting of the game.[4]
  • The defacement of the graffiti is discussed in dialogue found in the game files ("The movement will survive this, you'll see. This is the very essence of per aspera ad astra." "I don't know. The neighborhood is changing. The old fear is creeping back into it's bones. Now this cruentus business? That means 'soaked in blood'. Jesus, that's a threat!").[5] Whether or not this dialogue can be heard in-game has not been confirmed.
  • The Latin phrase Per Aspera Ad Astra is a common motto used by many organizations in the real world.
