DX Multitool (inventory icon)

The multitool is an item in Deus Ex that is used to manipulate electronic locks, security cameras, autogun turrets, alarms and other security devices. A maximum of 15 multitools can be held in the inventory.

Background[]

A disposable electronics tool. By using electromagnetic resonance detection and frequency modulation to dynamically alter the flow of current through a circuit, skilled agents can use the multitool to manipulate code locks, cameras, autogun turrets, alarms, or other security systems.
IN-GAME DESCRIPTION

According to the UNATCO Training Manual, the multitool can dynamically alter current flow in almost any non-hardened circuitry. However, multitools cannot be used for computer information extraction.

Use[]

Multitools work by "bypassing" security devices to the following effects (when the device is fully bypassed):

  • Acoustic sensor - A multitool can be used to disable the acoustic sensor.
  • Alarm sounder panel - A multitool can be used to disable the alarm panel, preventing enemies from using it.
  • Turrets - A multitool can be used to turn the turret to the "Ignore all" state.
  • Electronic control panel - A multitool can be used to disables whatever it was linked to, such as laser tripwires or electrical hazards.
  • Security Keypad - A multitool lets you process the keypad without knowing its code. In general, bypassing keypad will unlock a door or other locked object that is linked to the keypad to the same effect of correctly entering the keycode.
  • Retinal scanner - A multitool can be used to open the door without clearance.
  • Security camera - A multitool can be used to disable the camera.

Each multitool is a single-use consumable item that is permanently expended when it is used. The effect of a single multitool depends on the user's electronics skill, as shown below. At higher electronics skill levels, multitools have higher "strength," which corresponds to the maximum amount of bypass strength of the security device that can be reduced per multitool.

Computer Skill (level) Multitool Strength
Untrained 10%
Trained 25%
Advanced 40%
Master 75%

Security device with an "infinite" bypass strength cannot be bypassed using multitools. For example, keypads with "infinite" bypass strength can only be unlocked by entering the correct code, and not through the use of multitools.

Multitool cannot be used to access personal computers and security computers, which are instead hacked using the computer skill.

Notes[]

  • Internally, the above-listed security devices are part of the HackableDevices class of object. Objects in this class are characterized by the variables bHackable, which defines whether a device can be bypassed at all, and hackStrength, which defines the bypass strength of the object. While the the operation of multitools is generally described as "hacking" in the internal game files, this terminology is not used in-game, likely to avoid confusion with the hacking function provided by the computer skill.
  • While using a multitool, taking the target device out of focus before it is finished will prematurely abort overriding the device (although its resistance will still be depleted).
  • In a few rare instances, it is possible to encounter "dummy" keypads that are not tied to any existing map event (for examples of such keypads, please see the keycodes list). Bypassing such keypads will play the access granted sequence but will not have any actual effect, in the same manner that entering the correct keycode will have no effect.
