Brian "Jock" Flanagan[1] is a pilot who flies black helicopters for UNATCO in 2052. He works closely with Paul and JC Denton.

Biography[]

Background[]

Jock was a pilot for the United States Air Force who worked at Area 51. Although he did not have access to the main complex, he was intrigued by the activity at the base. It was being visited by big executives, rocks were being extracted, and optical communications cables were being installed.[2] Jock later left the US Air Force and became a UNATCO pilot, entrusted to fly one of the so-called "black helicopters," low-noise, low-visibility stealth helicopters deployed to assist UNATCO with their covert operations.

Jock has an apartment in Hong Kong, located across the street from Maggie Chow's apartment. In Hong Kong, Jock was employed by Tracer Tong to conduct surveillance on Maggie Chow. He was also informed by Paul that he should be ready to assassinate Maggie if Tong gives the orders.[3]

Prior to meeting JC Denton, Jock was urged by Daedalus to return to New York to help Paul and JC. Daedalus assisted Jock by securing the necessary authorizations to fly a black helicopter out of the MJ12 Helibase in Hong Kong.[3]

Working with JC Denton[]

In New York, Jock assists JC with his UNATCO missions at the Warehouse District and LaGuardia Airport. After Paul defects from UNATCO, Joseph Manderley assigns Jock to fly JC to Hong Kong for his next mission with UNATCO. However, Jock instead takes JC to see Paul, thus revealing himself as part of the resistance against UNATCO and Majestic 12. Paul convinces JC to defect from UNATCO, but JC is unable to rendezvous with Jock and is captured by UNATCO.

Later, when JC Denton escapes from UNATCO's headquarters, Daedalus tips off Jock to pick up JC at the helipad outside the headquarters. From this point forward, Jock acts as JC's pilot, flying him to Hong Kong, back to New York again, to Paris, and eventually to Area 51.

While at Morgan Everett's Home in Paris, an undercover MJ12 operative disguised as a mechanic installs a bomb on Jock's helicopter. If JC and Jock fail to discover the bomb, Jock's helicopter will explode shortly after dropping JC off at Area 51.

Description[]

Now, Jock is a really great pilot. He can pilot a chopper straight up a cyclone and right down a drainpipe. Well, maybe not really a cyclone, but he knows how to compensate for the updraft over an all-out firestorm, and isn't the least bit fazed when the thick pastic windshield starts buckling from the heat. He can drop you as safe as a kitten into enemy territory, and when you need him to pluck you out of a heavy-fire zone, he'll be there for you. Nap-of-the-earth is almost a real nap for him. He's that good.

More than that, though, Jock is a really great guy. He's not into all this nouveau-macho touchy-feelie crap, but he knows what's important and he's fearless when it comes to doing the right thing. He's more than the guy you call for a combat pick-up, he's someone you can call when you just don't know what to do next.

Interactions[]

Jock is first encounterable at in the Underworld Tavern during the first visit to Hell's Kitchen. This is the only time that Jock appears in person outside of his helicopter. If JC buys beer for Jock, Jock will tell his stories about being a pilot and his work involving Area 51. As the game progresses, Jock becomes JC's primary method of transportation.

Jock's fate depends on whether the odd mechanic in Morgan Everett's Home was taken care of. If JC kills or knocks out the mechanic, Jock will ask JC about his actions and will search his helicopter after being told to by JC, finding and disarming the bomb. Alternatively, JC can report the mechanic to Everett, and not attack the mechanic in any way. Jock will still find the bomb through this route. Otherwise, the bomb will remain undiscovered and result in Jock's death at Area 51.

If Everett is spoken to and tells the player to dispose of the mechanic but the mechanic is not killed (or knocked unconscious[4]), the bomb will be discovered and "disarmed." This will not result in rattling noises, but will still lead to the helicopter explosion and Jock's death at the beginning of Area 51 due to a scripting oversight.[5]

Notes[]

  • Jock's role in surveilling Maggie is evidenced by a set of binoculars in Jock's apartment, as well as a sniper rifle hidden on a ledge.
