The Free Clinic, also known as the Tenderloin Clinic,[1] is a public clinic in Hell's Kitchen appearing in Deus Ex. The location can be visited during the first and third visits to Hell's Kitchen, but is not accessible during the second visit to Hell's Kitchen.

Background[]

When the gray death pandemic arrived in New York City, the free clinic was put under considerable stress from the locals, since it lacks the ability to cure the disease. According to one of its doctors, J. Allred, the clinic is unable to help patients with the Gray Death, but can only give them fluids to keep them hydrated until they crash-out.

Although certain locals expect the clinic to provide free services,[2] the clinic does require payment for certain services,[3] such as access to medbots in the surgery bay. By the time JC Denton arrives in Hell's Kitchen as part of his UNATCO assignment, many locals have taken refugee in the clinic not only due to the Gray Death, but also to take refugee from the fighting between UNATCO and the NSF.[4]

Interactions[]

First visit to Hell's Kitchen[]

During the first visit to Hell's Kitchen, the clinic is opened and staffed by various personnel, including two doctors that offer medkits or access to the surgery bay. The surgery bay contains multiple medbots that can be used to heal the player.

  • The doctor in the lobby area sells a medkit for 300 credits and the keycode (2153) to the surgery bay for 2000 credits
  • The doctor in the examining area, who is being harassed by a patient, also offers the same items for sale, but will provide a 40% discount if JC helps fend off the patient.

Third visit to Hell's Kitchen[]

During the third visit to Hell's Kitchen, the clinic is no longer staffed. However, Joe Greene can be encountered at this location. Dealing with Joe Greene is part of an objective given by Harley Filben.

Notes[]

  • The computer in the examining area has an account belonging to J. Allred. Emails also mention another doctor named Thomas More. However, the doctors that are encountered in the clinic during the first visit are not identified by names in their labels. Internally, their conversation identifiers are "Doctor1" and "Doctor2", respectively.
  • Similarly, while the computer on the receptionist desk has an account belonging to Alice Priest, the receptionist character during the first visit is not given a name in her character label.
  • The emails on the computers during the third visit to Hell's Kitchen are not affected if the two unnamed doctors or the receptionist was killed during the first visit.
