Square Enix, incorporated as Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. (株式会社スクウェア・エニックス・ホールディングス, Kabushiki-gaisha Sukuwea Enikkusu Hōrudingusu?) and formerly named Square Enix Co., Ltd.,[1] is a Japanese video game conglomerate. Square Enix was the former owner and publisher of the Deus Ex franchise via one of its subsidiaries, Square Enix Europe. Square Enix is also known for known for its Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Kingdom Hearts video game franchises, among others.
Square Enix Europe and the Deus Ex series[]

On February 12, 2009, Square Enix announced a takeover deal worth £84.3 million (32p per share) for Eidos plc, the holding company for Eidos Interactive, the UK-based publisher of the Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, and Hitman franchises. The acquisition was completed in April 22, 2009, resulting in Square Enix (then known as Square Enix Co., Ltd.) acquiring Eidos Interactive via its subsidiary Square Enix Limited. The merger created a new entity called Square Enix Europe. Square Enix Europe then served as the official owner and publisher of Deus Ex series games, although the umbrella name "Square Enix" was commonly used by the press and in marketing materials when referring to the publisher of the games.
Following the acquisition, Eidos Montréal, one of the studios of the former Eidos Interactive, retained the "Eidos" name, and released the games Deus Ex: Human Revolution in 2011 and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided in 2016 under the ownership of Square Enix. A number of related media, including novels, comic book series, and spinoff games, were also released during the period of Square Enix's ownership of the franchise.
Square Enix Europe also founded Square Enix Montréal in 2011, a studio that developed the mobile game Deus Ex GO, which was released in 2016.
In August 2022, Embracer Group AB acquired Eidos-Montréal, Square Enix Montréal, and the Deus Ex intellectual property assets from Square Enix Europe, thus becoming the new owner of the Deus Ex franchise.
