Miguel was an National Secessionist Forces (NSF) footsoldier who was captured by UNATCO forces and imprisoned in the secret Majestic 12 base beneath the UNATCO Headquarters on Liberty Island. Miguel appears in Deus Ex as a potential ally to the protagonist, JC Denton.

Interactions[]

This character is involved in missions. 5th Mission - Secret MJ12 Facility

Miguel is encountered in a detention cell near JC's. His cell can be opened by the code 4679. When JC first meets Miguel, the NSF soldier already knows, more or less, who JC is, acknowledging JC as the "spy they caught." If JC is injured, Miguel will provide him with a medkit which he had smuggled in. Miguel is armed with a combat knife—something else he had managed to smuggle in.

Throughout escaping from the MJ12 base and the UNATCO headquarters, JC can order Miguel to follow and cover him, stay where he is, or make a break for it himself. It is possible for Miguel to die, although his death will have no effect on the game's plot. If Miguel escapes to the helicopter successfully, he will stop accompanying JC and the two will part ways, with Miguel thanking JC and wishing him good luck. If Miguel escapes, his eventual fate is not known.

Personality[]

Miguel possesses a straightforward, obedient and very optimistic personality (even reassuring JC Denton that the former believes they can "make it" out), demonstrated by his willingness to escape, as well as following JC's orders.

Quotes[]

  • "You're the spy they caught, right?"—To JC when they first meet in the detention cell in the MJ12 base.
  • "Let's get out of here. I smuggled in a knife -- and a medkit, too. You look like you could use some first aid."—Offering JC a medkit.
  • "I've got you covered."—When accompanying JC.
  • "Now what?"—When JC tries to give him a command.
  • "Good luck, JC. I can make it on my own from here."—To JC before he leaves to go to Hong Kong (only if he was set to follow the player at this point).

Notes[]

  • The game is scripted to spawn a Miguel instance on Mission 5 maps as long as he was last set to follow the player and is not dead. Because he doesn't have to actually follow the player, there are many ways to get him to exit safely in purely Non-Lethal Gameplay.[1]
  • Because the game is also scripted to delete Miguel if he is not set to follow the player, if the player changes maps while in this state and the target or origin map is the MJ12 Secret Base, he will disappear and won't reappear unless the flag is set manually, even if he was only talked to and then left alone. He will however still be in the cell if never talked to.[2]
  • Due to a scripting oversight, if the player already has the maximum amount of medkits attainable (15) when first talking to Miguel, the one that he would yield will drop to the floor instead. This will keep happening on any subsequent attempts to talk to him, allowing the player an infinite source of medkits.
    • However, in order to have Miguel offer to follow the player, it's required that the latter has received his medkit. So if one's inventory of this item is full, they should get rid of one (either use or drop one) in order to make space, receive the item and continue with his plot.
  • Even if the player takes Miguel to both armories and disarms every soldier standing in the way, Miguel will always use just a knife.[3]
  • Miguel will attack every hostile target, including heavy armor robots.[4]
  • Having a Spanish accent, it is presumed that Miguel is of Hispanic heritage. His face is never seen, as he is depicted using the generic NSF terrorist character model.
  • Since Miguel uses a generic NSF character model, he has the same low base health as other NSF troops. Given his limited armament, he will likely get killed by the first MJ12 soldier he attacks.
  • Miguel is the last NSF soldier JC meets in-game.

  3. Pawns don't pick up items on their own and need a working script to be able to handle transferred items. This is seen with Gunther Hermann who cannot use the weapon the player gives him (a knife, pistol, stealth pistol or assault rifle) as opposed to Gilbert Renton.
  4. Because he cannot be given orders while in this state, the only way to get him back is to cause enough provocations to get him to attack JC and keep him away from his previous target so that he "forgets" about it.
