"When government surveillance and intimidation is called 'freedom from terrorism' or 'liberation from crime,' freedom and liberty have become words without meanings."
— Chad Dumier

Chad Dumier is a character in Deus Ex and its sequel Deus Ex: Invisible War. In Deus Ex, set in the early 2050s, he is the leader of the resistance group called Silhouette and is also implied as being the lover of Nicolette DuClare. Later, by the time of Deus Ex: Invisible War, he has become the Chairman of the WTO. Chad is referred to only by his first name in Deus Ex. His surname "Dumier" later appears in Invisible War.

Biography[]

2052[]

A true exemplar of the 21st century intellectual, Chad (it's the only name he ever uses) is perhaps the world's first great punk philosopher. Maybe the general state of the world has a lot to do with it, but when you hear Chad talk about it, anarchy just suddenly seems to make a lot of sense.

While still an undergrad in Paris, Chad started to earn a rep as a daring new voice in the ever more exact yet complex field of political science. Between his master's and his Ph.D., however, his passions changed. Instead of graduating and joining some high-level think tank, he dropped out and formed Silhouette, a quasi-legal coalition dedicated to countering official lies and promoting individual liberty through information and subversion. In only a few years Silhouette managed to get itself branded as an international terrorist organization, and Chad rose directly to the top of the world's most wanted list.

Deus Ex official strategy guide, "Chad: Intellectual, Subversive and Wanted Man"

In 2052, Chad was the leader of the French resistance movement, Silhouette. Nicolette DuClare provided the bulk of Silhouette's funding and intelligence through her late mother's massive fortune and former Illuminati contacts, which Chad then shared with his allies throughout the resistance community. Chad was an idealistic young man who embraced pacifism wherever possible, his forces conducting mostly propaganda operations. These ranged from hijacking media applications such as television broadcasts and public bulletin board links across Paris, to dropping leaflets from buildings into the populated streets below. In order to tarnish Silhouette's image in the eyes of the public, Majestic 12 covertly demolished the Statue of Liberty with C-4 explosives, and then blamed its destruction on Silhouette. This strategy worked, as Silhouette's political status was changed from minor activist nuisance to extremist terrorist organization.

Unlike his foreign allies, such as the National Secessionist Forces (NSF) in the United States, Chad loathed the use of violence against his opponents, who were largely unaware of MJ12's existence and unintentionally enforced the organization's will through corrupt law-enforcement and security agencies. Paul Denton considered Silhouette to be the "brains of the resistance movement,"[1] due to its ability to inspire separate rebel factions across the world to successfully form a coalition capable of resisting Majestic 12.

After Juan Lebedev's failed attempt to hijack the Ambrosia vaccine from UNATCO, Director Joseph Manderley retrieved detailed information regarding Silhouette's activities and operational locations obtained from Lebedev's computers and provides them to Majestic 12. Chad was forced to evacuate his forces from their headquarters and regroup underground in the Parisian catacombs, hunted down by Majestic 12. With two stragglers captured and held hostage by the Majestic 12 unit scouring the vast network of tunnels for their location, and very few members (including unarmed women and children) composing the remainder of his forces, Chad believed his situation to be utterly hopeless and contemplated surrender to the enemy. However, JC Denton arrived in Paris and, with the help of Chad, locates Nicolette, who then helped JC partake in a course of action that would result in the destruction of Majestic 12.

2072[]

Chad, the leader of an idealistic band of French revolutionaries during the 2050s, has risen steadily through the bureaucratic ranks of the new WTO, which since the Collapse has grown into a quasi-governmental body that seeks to rebuild the world. Once an idealist, he has been hardened by years of post-apocalyptic bedlam. Society for him is an engineering problem that needs to be solved within a margin of error but not necessarily exactly. Increasingly, as his career has lifted him into the position of WTO Chairman, he has come to resemble the monied, privileged powerbrokers he once fought against.

By 2072, Chad has become the joint leader of the Illuminati, along with his partner, Nicolette DuClare. After the chaos of the Great Collapse and the destruction of MJ12 along with all other world governments, Chad abandoned his idealistic anti-establishment philosophy and joined the Illuminati, becoming the group's main leader.

In public, Chad is recognized as Chairman of the World Trade Organization and the most powerful man in the known post-Collapse world. Through total control of all major media outlets, he broadcasts a message of globalization and controlled economic development. Since he and Nicolette are unable to conceive children, Chad is looking for a gifted protégé to train as his successor, and takes Klara Sparks, and then Alex D under his wing. However, Chad is also a ruthless and demanding figure, and does not hesitate to threaten and even to kill his underlings if they disappoint him. He detains and eventually tries to execute Klara Sparks when she develops pacifist feelings, and uses Klara as a hostage to get Alex to do his bidding. Chad also does not hesitate to swiftly and mercilessly silence those who stand in the way of the Illuminati's goals, whether they be world-altering entities like JC Denton, or merely inconvenient coffee shop owners who learn more than they should know.

This character is involved in missions. 9th Mission - Catacombs

Chad appears in the Paris Catacombs along with other Silhouette members in hidden bunker. When spoken to, Chad provides JC with the nanokey to access the blast doors, as well as the optional objective of rescuing the two Silhouette held by Majestic 12. Chad will also provide information on Nicolette, along with additional dialogue pertaining to his resistance against Majestic 12. Although Chad is heavily involved with the mission's backstory and multiple optional objectives, speaking to Chad is not strictly required, since it is also possible to obtain the nanokey from a cabinet in Chad's the bunker.

Notes[]

  • In 2052, Paul Denton mentioned Chad to be a friend. Twenty years later, Chad refers to Paul as a terrorist and calls for his assassination.
  • Although Chad can be killed in Deus Ex, Invisible War establishes that he survives.

Trivia[]

  • The smiley face with a headshot seen on Dumier's shirt is a reference to the Hacker, the protagonist of System Shock (one of Warren Spector's earlier games). The smiley found on the Hacker's T-shirt is in turn a reference to the badge worn by Eddie Blake aka the Comedian in the comic book series Watchmen.
