The baton is a low-tech skill weapon in Deus Ex. The baton is a non-lethal melee weapon that is capable of rendering enemies unconscious.

The baton serves as the most basic non-lethal weapon. It has low base damage, but is the only non-lethal weapon that does not use expendable ammunition.
The baton has no damage modifier for attacks against the head, a trait that is shared with the riot prod. All other weapons have a 8x damage multiplier against the head. The baton retains the standard 2x damage modifier against other body parts (i.e., the torso, arms, and legs). Consequently, the baton does less damage against the head than other body parts. Therefore, the optimal target is the torso, rather than the head.
The baton's base damage is sufficient to knock out common troopers in a single hit at any skill level, provided that the hit is made from stealth and is directed to the torso. Due to the lack of a headshot multiplier, stealth attacks against the head are incapable of knocking out common troopers in a single hit, unless the baton is used with master skill level.
Compared to combat knife, the baton has a higher base damage. However, the combat knife is eligible for the 8x damage multiplier for head attacks.
Notes[]
- The baton does no damage to robots. Robots have full immunity against the "KnockedOut" damage type inflicted by the baton.
- The baton can complement the pepper gun or riot prod, since damage is increased four-fold against enemies that are stunned by the pepper gun or riot prod.
